Positions Available
CORE (SUMMER MANAGEMENT TEAM)

Head Counselor: Collaborates with the Summer Camp Director to meet staffing needs, including interviewing and hiring before summer. Manages staff personal days and emergency replacements, ensuring appropriate coverage for drills and coordinating with the registrar for camper and staff placements. Acts as the point of contact for the Division Director team, leading daily meetings on camper and staff well-being. Addresses higher-level camper and staff issues, interacting with families as needed. The Head Counselor must be empathetic yet firm, maintain confidentiality, stay organized, and remain composed under stress. Note: Expectations and responsibilities are extensive, including a considerable amount of paid work before summer.

Camp Consultant: Proactively connect with camper families/guardians regarding the implementation of mental health/behavioral supports in the camp environment. Communicate plans to and follow up with summer staff. Be a resource for guidance and decisions as needed.

Camp Operations Director: Collaborate with the management team regarding area programming, place campers into their morning rotations, and oversee daily camp operations. Point of contact for and co-evaluator of Area Directors. Other duties/responsibilities are decided based on the strengths of the staff member and the needs of the camp. Note: Expectations and responsibilities are extensive, including a considerable amount of paid work before summer.

Division Director: First-line support for cabin staff and liaison. Oversee 3-5 cabins per week (up to 50 campers), and ensure that counselors have the support they need to be successful. Work closely with the Summer Camp Director and the management team in the implementation of camper behavior management plans. Involves possible mediation with campers, contact with parents/guardians, and possible evaluation of cabin staff. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Adventure Director: Plan Adventure programming utilizing low ropes elements, team-building exercises/games, and outdoor adventures. The focus of the Adventure Program is to offer activities that encourage teamwork, personal growth, and outdoor skills while providing a fun and engaging environment for campers. It aims to build confidence and promote collaboration through experiential learning. Oversee program area, including staff management, scheduling, program quality, and maintenance. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Arts & Nature Director: Plan Arts & Nature programming that is designed to inspire creativity and artistic talents, and foster appreciation for the camperā€™s natural surroundings via crafts, music, theater, pottery, drawing, painting, STEM, etc. Oversee program area, including staff management, scheduling, program quality, and maintenance. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Ballfield Director: Plan and implement fun and engaging Ballfield programming that is designed to foster teamwork, friendly competition, and sportsmanship through traditional sports/games and innovative activities. Supervise and facilitate archery as needed (training to be discussed). Oversee program area, including staff/camper management, scheduling, program quality, and maintenance. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties outside their direct role.

Leader in Training (LIT) Director: Collaborate with the LIT team to develop hands-on training sessions for teens with a focus on developing their leadership skills. Emphasis for the LIT Program is placed on communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Create and implement opportunities for LITs to practice their leadership skills, provide mentorship, and assess overall training effectiveness. Provide guidance and act as a mentor to LIT staff. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Assistant LIT Director: Collaborate with the LIT Director to develop hands-on training sessions for teens with a focus of developing their leadership skills. Emphasis for the LIT Program is placed on communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Create and implement opportunities for LITs to practice their leadership skills, provide mentorship, and assessment of overall training effectiveness. Will have various counselor duties throughout the week. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Counselor in Training (CIT) Director: Collaborate with the CIT team to develop and provide high-quality hands-on training for teens with the focus of preparing them for future positions at camp. Observe/evaluate, provide mentorship and assessment to campers/assistants, and overall training effectiveness. Coordinate with other management team members for the integration of campers into camp programming. Meet with the Camp Director to discuss the progress of campers.

Assistant CIT Director: Collaborate with the CIT Director to develop hands-on training sessions for teens with the focus of preparing CITs for future positions at camp. Assist with CIT observation/evaluation, provide mentorship, and assessment of overall training effectiveness. Will have various counselor duties throughout the week. Note: All core staff may perform additional duties beyond their role.

Spiritual Director: Responsible for all aspects of the program area; including, but not limited to, staff management, scheduling, program quality, and physical upkeep. Plan and implement instructional programs that foster spiritual development for campers and staff. Spiritual development may be values-based and self-reflective through stories, hands-on activities, discussions, etc. Lead or designate someone to guide staff through Prime Time (staff-only reflection time once/week).

Waterfront Director: Oversee program area, including staff/camper management, scheduling, program quality, and maintenance. The waterfront program area includes swimming, motorized and non-motorized boats, inflatables, gaga, etc. Assess the swimming ability of all campers and staff before participation, mentor and train all staff for assigned waterfront duties, and ensure the safety of all campers and staff while they are at the waterfront. Must obtain the following certifications: Lifeguarding with Waterfront Skills, Progressive Swimming Instructor or Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard Management. Note: All core staff members are expected to perform additional duties outside their direct role.

Permanent Rover: In the absence of a cabin counselor, assist in supervising and mentoring a cabin of 10-14 campers, providing leadership and guidance during activities, meals, and nighttime. Participate in camp programs while maintaining camper supervision and ensuring camper safety throughout their stay. Rovers are the ā€˜Jack of all tradesā€™, with the job responsibilities tailored to the needs of the camp and the strengths of the staff member.

Program Director: Oversee the daily camp schedule and all camp activities, requiring creativity, flexibility, and organization to develop programs that align with the camp theme. This role involves adapting quickly to changing weather or program needs and collaborating closely with the management team to manage large-scale programming and daily operations. Note: Expectations and responsibilities are extensive, including a considerable amount of paid work before summer.

Resource Counselor: Support the emotional & behavioral well-being of our campers & staff. The ideal candidate will have experience in mental health support, a passion for working with children, adolescents, and young adult staff, and provide meaningful support where needed. Advise staff and provide support for campers as needed, implement appropriate intervention and crisis management when necessary, and maintain open communication with management team and camper parent/guardian.

CABIN COUNSELOR

Overnight Cabin Counselor: Assist in supervising and mentoring a cabin of 10-14 campers, providing leadership and guidance during activities, meals, and nighttime. Participate in camp programs while maintaining camper supervision and ensuring camper safety throughout their stay. Cabin staff are the frontline magic makers. They are the heroes and role models that campers talk about, remember, and aspire to be. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Replacement Staff: Prior CSM Staff is required.Ā  Fill in for staff for a week-long session as needed. Do not attend staff training week.

DAY CAMP

Day Camp Counselor: Work with a co-counselor to ensure the general safety and well-being of 10-12 campers (ages 5-12) for the week (typically 8 hours/day). Counselors play a vital role in creating a fun and nurturing environment, fostering personal growth and community among campers. Be a positive role model and leader and provide emotional and social support while guiding campers throughout their day. Maintain open communication with campers, parents/guardians, and staff.Ā  Actively participate in all required trainings, meetings, and camper programs.

Day Camp Assistant Director: Assist the Day Camp Director with overall management, supervision, and planning for the total day camp operation. Help to ensure high quality, age-relevant programming for day campers (ages 5-12) as well as facilitate positive behavior management. Involves physical maintenance of the area, scheduling of campers and staff, helping with staff evaluations, budgeting, ordering, and communication with camper families.

Ā Day Camp Director: Responsible for all aspects of the day camp program area; including, but not limited to, staff management/evaluations, scheduling, program quality, and physical upkeep. Facilitate positive behavior management for approximately 50 campers (ages 5-12), be a positive role model and leader providing emotional and social support for campers and staff.Ā  Maintain open communication with campers, parents/guardians, and staff. Actively participate in all required trainings, meetings, and camper programs.

MEDICAL

Nurse: Collaborate with the Summer Camp Director, Health Director, and health center staff to ensure camper and staff health and safety. Review medical requirements and oversee medication administration, including scheduling and logging. Assess and administer treatment for both campers and staff and assist with parent communication regarding health forms and injuries. Maintain timely communication with the DOH, and camp management, and ensure continuity of care. Additional responsibilities include guiding health center staff, assisting with medication returns on pick-up day, and keeping the Health Center clean and ready. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Full & Part-time options

This role involves administering first aid, treating injury and illness, monitoring health and sanitation, and reviewing/maintaining confidential medical histories of both campers and staff. Open and confidential communication with camper families/guardians, the medical staff and the camp management team is essential. Medical staff are expected to be welcoming and polite, ensuring a safe place for everyone.

Health Center Assistant: Assists the Nurse and/or the Health Director with assessing and addressing the physical and mental health needs of campers and staff. This role involves administering first aid, treating injury and illness, monitoring health and sanitation, and reviewing/maintaining confidential medical histories of both campers and staff. Open and confidential communication with camper families/guardians, the medical staff, and the camp management team is essential. Medical staff are expected to be welcoming and polite, ensuring a safe environment for everyone.

Health Director: Collaborate with the Summer Camp Director and Nurse to ensure camper & staff health and safety. Responsibilities include: updating medical orders and safety plans, creating staff schedules, conducting health center training, reviewing camper medical histories, and coordinating with parents on special needs. They will oversee the implementation of the NYSDOH Childrenā€™s Camp Safety Plan, manage health screenings, handle emergencies, and maintain medical logs. Weekly duties involve addressing staff on camper health concerns, providing allergy information, overseeing check-in, and preparing medication tickets. The Health Director will communicate to pertinent staff all camper medical concerns, ensure compliance with medical orders, document injuries, supervise EMTs, facilitate staff training, and manage Health Center operations, including closing procedures. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

FOOD SERVICE/CULINARY

Food Service Director: Responsible for overall food service operations. Plan menus, order food, maintain inventories, and cook for approximately 400-450 people/meal. Ensure the dietary needs of campers and staff are met. Direct supervision, support, coaching, and training of kitchen staff. Responsible for safe and proper storage of all food including daily rotation, organizing and storing of food deliveries, following sanitation codes, and enforcing safety regulations in accordance with NYSDOH requirements. Maintain a positive attitude and friendly demeanor towards all staff and campers.

Cook: Prepare, cook, and serve food (for approximately 450 people/meal) according to menus planned by the Food Service Director, ensuring that the dietary needs of campers and staff are met. Direct supervision, support, coaching, and training of kitchen staff. Responsible for safe and proper storage of all food including daily rotation, organizing and storing of food deliveries, following sanitation codes, and enforcing safety regulations in accordance with NYSDOH requirements. Maintain a positive attitude and friendly demeanor towards all staff and campers.

Assistant Cook/Prep Person: Prepare and serve food according to menus planned by the Food Service Director and ensure that the dietary needs of campers and staff are met. Assist in the supervision, support, coaching, and training of kitchen staff. Responsible for safe and proper storage of all food including daily rotation, organizing and storing food deliveries, following sanitation codes, and enforcing safety regulations.

Dining Hall Manager: Manage, support, train, and supervise 8-10 kitchen staff in the daily set-up, serving, break-down, and cleaning of the dining hall. Assist with scheduling where needed, establish communication practices between cooks and kitchen staff, oversee implementation of sanitation requirements, and help with maintaining accurate record of kitchen inventory.

Live-in Kitchen Staff: Responsible for preparation, plating and serving of 2 meals/day, assisting in overall cleaning and upkeep of kitchen and dining hall area. Adhere to all health and sanitation guidelines including food storage and rotation.

PART-TIME POSITIONS

Night watchperson: Remain alert, awake, and moving about the campground keeping a watchful eye on all property and personnel of CSM between the hours of 11:45 pm and 7:15 am. MUST BE TIMELY and available for the entire summer. Advanced notice for time off is required.

Sailing Instructor: Teach and assist campers in the safe operation of sunfish sailboats during morning programming. Assess camper skill level to determine level of instruction and if they are safe to sail in various weather/lake conditions. Drive rescue boat providing guidance and support as needed. Maintain equipment and open communication with management team.

Boat Driver: Safely drive campers on motorboats for tubing, boat rides. etc. Boater Safety Course required prior to employment and CSM will provide materials and pay for Public Vessel License exam (a passing grade is required for employment). Assist in overall maintenance and upkeep of boats, equipment, and waterfront areas.

OFFICE/MARKETING

Assistant to the Marketing Director: Collaborate with the year-round Marketing Director to ignite a passion for Camp Stella Maris by promoting it through diverse channels and cultivating meaningful connections with all who experience the camp. Manage the camp store (supervise staff & teens, process payments, order, organize and stock inventory, etc.) organize the distribution of Stella Snacks, and capture daily moments that inspire for a lifetime.

Office Assistant: Performs a variety of general office support duties including processing documents & payments, phone and email correspondence, organizing and preparing files for upcoming weeks, answering customer questions and providing general information, greeting the public and clients, and assisting other departments as needed.

Media Specialist: Capture daily moments through photography and videography. Produce videos throughout the week that will be viewed by families and used for marketing throughout the year. May have additional duties outside their direct role.

CLEANER

Cleaner: Assist with maintaining overall cleanliness and hygiene of restrooms, office, and various buildings and spaces around camp. Responsibilities include vacuuming, garbage collection/disposal, sweeping, mopping, dusting/wiping surfaces and ensuring the proper use and storage of equipment and chemicals.

A day in the life of an overnight cabin counselor

7:15-9:00: Wake-up, Breakfast, Hygiene/Prep for Day (counselors split shift)
9:00-12:30: Area Programming (includes 1 hour off)
12:30-2:00: Lunch (2 shifts), Snacks at Store (1/2 of Campers), Downtime, Staff Meeting
AFTERNOON: Open Waterfront (All of the camp at the lake), Mass (Mon & Wed), Snack
5:30-6:30: Dinner (2 shifts) and Snacks at Store (Other 1/2 of Campers)
6:30-7:15: Open Ballfield (All of camp at the ballfield)
7:30-8:30: Evening Program (All camp activities planned by our Program Director)
8:30-10:00: Campers get ready for bed, etc.
10:00-12:00: 1 hour of time off per counselor
12:00: Curfew

What to expect

All summer camp live-in staff are required to arrive at camp by 12:00 on Sundays in preparation for campers to arrive for the week. After campers leave (either Friday or Saturday) staff are responsible for resetting camp for the arrival of the next session of campers. Once this is complete, staff are off until their next report time on Sunday.

Each day at camp is packed full of fun. Finding ways to manage your time to fit all the fun in and still have time to take a breath is a skill you will practice and become successful at very quickly. Through organization of planned activities, down time and spur of the moment activities you will gain knowledge to become successful in these areas in future endeavors.

Once campers arrive, you accept responsibility for them. You will become skilled in ensuring camper safety both physically & emotionally while guaranteeing campers are fully engaged in their positive experiences at camp.
